March is Women’s History Month and March 8, International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day (IWD) is March 8 to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is #PressforProgress.

The first International Women’s Day was in 1911. It was celebrated for the first time by the United Nations in 1975. The day of honor was initiated by the suffrage movement fighting for women’s right to vote.

The International Women’s Day website is made possible each year through support from corporations committed to driving gender parity. The website’s charity of choice for many years has been the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) whereby IWD fundraising is channeled. An organization that thrives in Coronado and raises up lots of girls to women.

Coronado’s population is about fifty percent women. I have had the privilege to meet and interview several women who may no longer have to fight for the right to vote but they are fighting for other things that impact our community and humanity. From Ashley Hope becoming a foster and adoptive parent to break the cycle, to Sandy Downes who has given 25 years to the young ladies on the island through Girl Scouts and more years to the City of Coronado as she retires this month, and Colleen Witterschein Warren who started a facebook group which is a community for citizens concerned about the relationship between our schools and this nation’s gun laws. A place where we can join together to make a difference, locally and/or nationally. And to make sure that what has happened to so many schools, students, teachers, families, loved ones – doesn’t happen at any of our Coronado schools, or elsewhere.

There are business owners, school volunteers, athletic volunteer coaches, scout leaders, moms, aunts, sisters, grandmothers, wives, stepmoms, and friends who deserve to be honored and recognized not just in March, and not just on March 8, but every day. From women’s marches to #metoo, women and girls of Coronado have participated to make a difference and have their voices be heard.

A few of the island businesses I spoke with have offered a discount on March 8, 2018, to honor the women of Coronado. Below is a list of the business who responded to the call:
