A commentary by Bill Bartsch
I went to see the Del tree today, wanting badly to dislike it for being “upside down” and not traditional. I tried hard. I’m all about tradition. But I failed. It’s a beautiful damn Christmas tree.
First, it’s not as garishly upside down as I expected. It just gently flares out a bit as it rises. And now we can stand much closer to the heart of the tree, and actually feel it rise a bit over us.
Next, they focused on an abundance of Christmas colored glass ornaments without garland or ribbons. Almost everything reflects the tiny white lights like stars in the sky.
Finally, I couldn’t take my eyes off the sparkling lights reflecting off the ornaments better than I’ve ever seen before. The reason why is because of the angle of the lights that strike upward and under the many ornaments that hang a little off the tree more due to the outward flare of the tree as it goes up.
Unfortunately I think it’s the warmest, most connecting tree I’ve enjoyed in their lobby.
Sorry, I get why everyone is marching on their management with pitchforks and torches, but I’m just gonna sneak a flask of Schnapps in and sit in the corner thinking about Christmas when I was a kid.
