Bridgeworthy: Free La Jolla Symphony Concert to Feature Local Trumpeter

Coronado’s Ken Fitzgerald (center) will be playing a trumpet solo during the event.

The La Jolla Symphony will be performing a free concert on Friday, November 3rd, at UCSD’s Mandeville Auditorium at 7pm. Coronado resident, Ken Fitzgerald, will be a featured soloist during the concert.  The Coronado Times asked Ken a few questions about the upcoming “bridgeworthy” concert.

CT:  Why should families come check out this event at UCSD’s Mandeville Auditorium?

KF: This children’s concert is a free and fun way for families to enjoy some great orchestral music in a relaxed, casual setting. Our Music Director Steve Schick will talk to the audience throughout the program, and he’ll answer questions that kids want to ask about the orchestra, the instruments, or the pieces we’re playing.  Maestro Schick is a passionate conductor, performer, and educator, and he does a great job of entertaining the audience and highlighting the aspects of the music that make it special. Also, the music we are performing is colorful, exciting, and uniquely American in its sound. This is a great chance to hear some of the best orchestral music ever written by two of America’s greatest composers.

CT: What does playing with the La Jolla Symphony mean to you and participating in these types of community events?

KF: I enjoy sharing music by performing in all kinds of settings, including in church at St. Paul’s in Coronado, at military cemeteries playing Taps for fallen veterans as a volunteer for Bugles Across America veterans’ funerals, and with the La Jolla Symphony. The La Jolla Symphony has been performing for over 50 years, and it is a wonderful community of volunteer musicians. We play in this orchestra because we love the music, and we love sharing the music with the community.
