In response to receiving the distinguished citizenship award, Casey said, “I couldn’t have been more surprised or honored by this recognition and the ovation given to me by you and your fellow Rotarians. To be honored for my service and appreciated in such a profound way is a gift that I will treasure all of my days. Thank you.”

Casey’s nomination letter for the award stated the following:

Casey Tanaka is a living civics lesson. His 14 years of public service to the community as mayor and city council person was highlighted by his willingness to listen, and his humble style. He was always thoughtful, fair and deliberate. Casey worked hard to safeguard and maintain the essential services that Coronado citizens have come to expect and rely upon. He was committed to making local government and City Hall accessible to its citizenry.

Casey’s interest in public service is an offshoot of his love of US History and politics. Teaching Advanced Placement History and government at Coronado High School, Casey serves as a passionate role model for the responsibilities and values involved with citizenship and a strong democracy.

Casey’s unique leadership and passion that is part of his spirit and whole being has been a great benefit to the Coronado community and to the young people who will be our informed citizens and future leaders.

“Just imagine what it is like to be a Coronado High School student studying U.S, history and government while having the mayor of your town as your teacher,” said Rotarian Steve Mather during his presentation of the award.

Coronado Rotarians give Casey Tanaka a standing ovation.

The 2016-2017 Peace Team of the Coronado Rotary Club respectfully nominated Casey Tanaka for consideration for the Bob Watson “Service Above Self” award. Peace Team members consist of Susan Enowitz (chair); Ray De Lagrave; Steve Mather; Rita Sarich; and Sharon Raffer.

Dan’l Steward, Chair of The Bob Watson Service Above Self Award Committee explained that this award is given quarterly to non-Rotarians for their “Service Above Self” commitment to the community. The award is presented in honor of Past President and Past District Governor, the late Bob Watson, in recognition of his “Service Above Self” and the personification of good citizenship.
