  • Short-term Rental Lawsuit: The City has filed a lawsuit against a local property owner who ignored multiple requests to comply with Coronado’s short-term rental ordinance. The City’s municipal code prohibits transient occupancy of homes in residential neighborhoods. As another busy summer season begins, the City hopes to send a clear message that it will prosecute those who violate the ordinance. On Tuesday, the court granted a temporary restraining order prohibiting the owners from renting their property on a short-term basis. The City also seeks injunctive relief in the form of civil penalties, fines, court costs and attorney fees. The hearing for the preliminary injunction is set for August 4. The City has previously successfully prosecuted three property owners who failed to comply with Coronado’s ordinances.
  • Ocean Water Testing: The City is working toward placing its ocean water test results online. The results will be listed regularly beginning in about mid-July. A plan is being formulated to create a webpage, which also will contain information about how and when the City tests and what it tests for. There will be links to the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health, which publishes its own results.
  • Fourth of July Events:  The Fourth of July falls on a Tuesday this year and the City expects big crowds throughout the weekend and all day July 4. The two largest events that day are the Fourth of July parade at 10 a.m. along Orange Avenue and the Fireworks Show over Glorietta Bay at 9 p.m. There are many other activities, including a 12K Run and 5K Run-Walk; a rough-water swim; a community concert; and a parachute demonstration in Glorietta Bay. The City has a list of frequently asked questions put together by the Coronado Police Department on parking restrictions, parade and traffic information online. The Free Summer Shuttle will run extended hours on the Fourth of July, from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. The regular Metropolitan Transit System as well as the shuttle buses will operate on C Avenue via Pomona Avenue during the parade closure starting around 9 a.m. There will be stops at Tenth, Sixth and First streets. See map below. The City also will provide special free bus service on the Fourth of July for Cays residents from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. in 30-minute intervals from the bus stop across from the Cays Fire Station to the Community Center.
  • Design Review Commission:  At its meeting on June 14, the Design Review Commission approved a new sign for the renovated public Glorietta Bay Boat Launching Facility at 1917 Strand Way. The Commission also approved the design of the proposed traffic signal fixtures at the intersection of Fourth Street and Alameda Boulevard. A public workshop on the signal was held on February 16 and on June 7. The City Council approved the signal as part of the Fiscal Year 2016-17 Capital Improvement Project. The California Department of Transportation has approved the design. City Council approval will be required to issue a request for bids.
  • South Embarcadero Performance Project: The San Diego Unified Port District’s Draft Environmental Impact Report for the Bayside Performance Park Enhancement Project and Port Master Plan Amendment is out. The project is a proposed 3.47-acre permanent performance and event venue in Embarcadero Marina Park South in San Diego that is the summer home of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. Construction is anticipated to take 10 months. The Draft EIR is available for a minimum 45‐day public review period ending at 5 p.m. on Monday, July 31. The Draft EIR is available online. The community is invited to review the document and share concerns with the Port. The City is reviewing the study, particularly as it relates to impacts on residents, including noise, aesthetics and visual resources. For questions about the draft EIR, call the District Real Estate Development Department at (619) 686‐6291.
