More than 60 people gathered at Spicy House in Coronado for trivia night on Monday. Host and former Coronado mayor, Casey Tanaka entertained the crowd with quirky questions in a variety of categories. Did you know chobani means ‘shepherd’?
“Within the last year or so I was thinking about approaching the owner of Spicy House with my idea, and fortunately the owner was very gracious enough and willing to give this a try,” said Tanaka. “It just seemed rather obvious to me that this particular venue, a) serves food, b) serves adult beverages, and c) is big enough to accommodate a large crowd for bar trivia.”
Kung Pao chicken wasn’t the only thing packing a one-two punch at the restaurant; in fact, the competition was fierce, as two gift cards to the restaurant were at stake.
“Study hard for the trivia because it ain’t easy,” said Geoff Bentley, former Coronado resident. Teaming up with his brother, but struggling to come up with correct answers, Bentley opted for a more light-hearted approach to the competition. “If we don’t know the answer, then we come up with something creative.”
Tanaka has participated in bar trivia two nights a week with other groups for more than three years. “I’ve observed what I like and what I don’t like,” said Tanaka. “It’s always going to be a bit quirky depending on who is operating it. The pacing has to be right and the questions have to [have answers] worthy of being known.”
Spicy House is located at 126 Orange Ave. Trivia night will be held at the eatery from 7pm to 9pm every Monday. Coronado residents are eligible for a 15% discount at Spicy House on Monday nights, so it’s a win just by showing up and playing!
