Bailey Takes the Helm on Tuesday

city-logoThe city council will begin a new chapter at its meeting Tuesday, December 20. Richard Bailey will be sworn in as Coronado’s 51st mayor. Whitney Benzian and Mike Donovan will be installed as city councilmen.

The swearing-in ceremony will also include proclamations for Mayor Casey Tanaka and Councilman Mike Woiwode.

Once the new council is seated they will certify the November 8 election results and announce appointment of council members to serve on boards and commissions.

Bailey will represent the city at SANDAG, Councilwoman Carrie Downey, the Coronado Naval Complexes Coordination Group; Benzian, the Chamber of Commerce; Donovan, the Coronado Historical Association; and Bill Sandke, the Golf Course Advisory Committee meetings. Sandke will also serve as mayor pro tem.

The council will consider a half dozen consent items, including approval of the Orange Avenue Corridor Street Light Poles’ History Banner Designs, and requests from Bailey and Sandke to discuss two items at future meetings.

The first request is for an expedited update on a water reclamation plant that has been in the works for some time. The city wants to use reclaimed water from the plant for parks, medians and the golf course.  The other is a request to see Caltrans Relinquishment Project Study Reports for California State Route 282 (Third Street and Fourth Street) and California State Route 75. Both are controlled by Caltrans and there has been discussion about asking the state to relinquish that control to the City of Coronado.

Asking for the report, Bailey stressed, “does not commit the city to relinquishment.” It simply gives the city council the information it needs to determine if “relinquishment makes sense for the city.”

The council meeting begins at 4pm in the Coronado City Council Chambers at 1825 Strand Way.
