On October 28th, Coronado High School NJROTC (Islander Company) set out for Phoenix, Arizona. After six hours they finally made it to their hotel at 10 pm. The next morning they got onto the bus excited and ready to take on the day’s challenges at the Drill Meet.
- The first event of the day was Academics. The Academic team is comprised of cadets that achieve high test scores and are required to know military history. Academic team won 2nd Place.
- Next was Personnel Inspection. Islander Company’s cadets were very loud and knew what they were doing. The company received 1st Place in Personnel Inspection.
- After Personnel Inspection came Armed Regulation. For those who don’t know, Armed Regulation is a drill team with rifles. They demonstrate the sharp and precise drill movements as specified in the Marine Corps Drill Manual. Armed Regulation earned 3rd Place.
- Right after was Armed Exhibition. Armed Exhibition is the spinning of rifles. Cadets on this team learn the skill of making beats and spinning rifles. Armed Ex spun their way to a solid 4th Place.
- Following Armed Ex, Unarmed Exhibition was ready to perform. Unarmed Exhibition is a drill team that uses their bodies to make beats while keeping military bearing. Unarmed Ex is very sharp and a fun team to be a part of. They received 2nd Place.
- After, the Color Guard took the drill pad. The Color Guard team for Islander Company is four females presenting the colors. Though they had some complications before the meet (losing their commander and training a new cadet days before the meet), these ladies did great. These four ladies were told that their performance was one of the smoothest CGs they had seen that day. The Color Guard team earned 2nd Place.
- To end drill for the day was Unarmed Regulation. Unarmed Regulation is a drill team that does in place/marching drill as specified in the Marine Corps Drill Manual. The team received 3rd Place.
- Overall, the drill teams placed 4th against the Arizona teams.
- After the drill was over, the cadets had the chance to prove themselves physically. They did just that earning 1st Place in push ups and curl ups, 3rd Place in the 1600 M Relay, and 4th Place in the 1600 M Shuttle run. Overall, Islander Company earned 2nd Place in physical fitness.
In the end, Coronado High School NJROTC took home an overall 3rd Place trophy from Arizona. Also, 19 individual cadets won awards in physical fitness and academics. All in all, this was a great and exciting weekend for Islander Company!
Islander Company would like to thank Moon Valley High School for putting on the drill meet, the parent chaperones for helping and making sure the energy was high for the cadets, the instructors for taking and caring for the cadets, and finally the cadets for staying late hours in the night and dedicating hours to perfecting their teams in preparation for this meet. Congrats to Islander Company on their success!
