  • Citizen Police Academy:  The Police Department will host a free Citizen Police Academy for eight weeks, starting September 14.   Classes will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays through November at the Police Department, 700 Orange Ave. The Police Academy will give participants an inside look into the Police Department, and an opportunity to learn about the various divisions, volunteer opportunities, how to be a better witness to a crime and participate in interactive demonstrations. If you are interested in signing up, please contact Dianne Dannemann at (619) 522-7355 or [email protected].

  • Orange Avenue Median:  The City is aware that large crowds, close to 100 people, are spontaneously gathering in the median-park in the 800 block of Orange Avenue to play Pokémon Go. The City has received complaints from Pokémon players about sprinklers that have gone off at their scheduled irrigation times. The City takes pride in its ornamental median-parks along Orange and has had the same watering pattern for many years. The City’s Public Services team recently made adjustments to the irrigation timing, specifically for this block, to mitigate the conflict. The City also has received some complaints of trash and debris being left in the area nightly. The City is monitoring the situation and asks players to stay away from the roadway, watch where you are going, leave the area as clean as you find it, and remember that sprinklers are set to water very late into the evenings of Sunday, Wednesday and Friday.

The candidate nomination period is open and runs through 5 p.m. on August 12 for candidates for the Mayoral position. The nomination period for candidates for the two Council seats will extend to August 17 as a Council incumbent’s seat will be open. Candidate information manuals have been provided to all potential nominees. Persons interested in taking out nomination papers should make an appointment with the City Clerk to receive an overview of the materials and deadlines. The filming will occur intermittently from approximately 5 a.m. to noon. Caltrans and the filming crews will be staging at the Toll Plaza and will be closing the No. 3 lane eastbound on the bridge during filming. Notification signs will be posted at the outbound base of the bridge by Caltrans approximately one week in advance.
