Coronado’s Annual Independence Day Run, The Crown City Classic is back for its 42nd year with a new course! Due to changes in military policy regarding civilian events on base, race organizers are unveiling an exciting new route to this proud and patriotic tradition in Coronado! The 12K course has been adjusted, leaving out the Naval Amphibious Base for the first time since 1993. Instead, the adjusted route for 2016 will extend south past the Navy Base along the bike path and turn around approximately ¼ mile past the Silver Strand Nature’s Bridge to Discovery. The 5K course will remain unchanged.
Coronado’s Independence Day Run has seen many changes over its long history and Easy Day Sports, the event company currently managing the event, strives to make all of them positive. “In many ways, this route adjustment provides a more scenic course for our runners while allowing the Navy to manage their security resources. After this year we will evaluate feedback from our runners and the city and if necessary make additional adjustments next year to continually improve the experience for all,” said Jamie Monroe the Race Director of the event. The Crown City Classic would also like to give a special thanks to the 4th of July Committee and the City of Coronado for allowing these unforeseen course adjustments.
Over the years, the Crown City Classic has become much more than just a race, but the best way to kick off your Coronado 4th of July festivities with a morning full of excitement and activities for the whole family!
The morning will begin with a high-energy fitness warm-up by Nasara of Sirius Fitness! Then, to get runners feeling pumped and patriotic for the run, a motivating speech inspired by the movie Independence Day occurs just prior to the National Anthem. This all culminates with all participants running under a giant 5000 square foot American Flag after the starting gun goes off! An exciting and innovative highlight of last year’s race.
Not only is the race a great way to celebrate the 4th of July but it also gives back to the community. The Islander Sports Foundation is the official charity of the Crown City Classic and has the mission of sustaining and funding the athletic programs of Coronado Schools.
The Crown City Classic has a race for everyone, with a 12K, 5K, and ½-mile Kids Fun Run. So dress yourself in red, white, and blue and join Coronado in a patriotic 7.4 mile run on 7/4! For more information about the course and to sign up for the 2016 Crown City Classic visit http://crowncityrun.com
