Initially, the Coronado High School Senior boys won the cheer competition that was performed on campus in the gym. However, they were disqualified for inappropriate dance moves and the Juniors took the dance title. Senior participants were told ahead of time what the rules were and were disqualified for breaking them. Later that evening, the CHS Senior girls beat the Junior girls in flag football.
Here is a recap from CHS Junior and Times’ intern Grace Sylvester:
Powder Puff was a “smashing success” as Coronado High School wraps up its classes of 2017 juniors and 2016 seniors in a trivial dance off and nail biting flag football game. The dances, choreographed by female students and were performed by the male students, were very interesting and crowd engaging as the entire student body watched the classes battle it out on the gym floor. As the assembly came to an end, the seniors were pronounced the winners of the dance off; however, after further input from the principal, the seniors were disqualified for not getting their dance moves approved by Jenni Moore and her faculty. From there, by default, the seniors were banned from performing their dance during the halftime show of the flag football match and were to allow the juniors to do theirs instead. But, in a burst of camaraderie from the junior class, they all decided to boycott the performance in a peaceful protest against the idea that they are not allowed to express their opinions and feelings through the art of dance without being censored by authority. The halftime show was not needed, though, thanks to the amazing players and suspenseful game played between the senior and junior girls. The ending score of the game was 3-0 seniors.
