Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.
Ribbon Cutting Planned at Spreckels Park: A ceremonial ribbon cutting is set for Monday, December 14, at 4:30 p.m. to mark the recent installation of a new accessible playground at Spreckels Park with an impact-absorbent accessible surface. City staff, members of the Parks and Recreation Commission and the community are welcome to attend to celebrate this important milestone. In July, the Port of San Diego completed its redesigned children’s playground at Coronado Tidelands Park which included major accessibility improvements, bringing the total number of playgrounds that offer universal equipment in Coronado to two. The Tidelands Park project has “universal design” features that take compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act to a new level of access for all. The equipment at both parks requires no need for adaption or specialized design.
SDG&E Work on Pomona Avenue:Â SDG&E began digging trenches on Pomona Avenue last week for a project to replace the gas main line from Glorietta Boulevard to Maria Place. Crews discovered a conflict with an existing water main that was not shown on the plans and work was stopped. SDG&E will restore the western side of Pomona and install the gas main on the eastern side. Pomona will remain open to traffic in both directions during the work; however, there may be slight delays due to construction activities. Drivers are asked to use caution as they travel through the construction zone and to obey all traffic signs and directions from traffic control workers.
Senior Center Name:Â The City Council is set to take up the question of what to name or call the new Adult/Senior Activity Center. Meanwhile, a groundbreaking for the project is planned for January 12 so save the date. The existing building will be replaced with a modern and more functional 9,000-square-foot building. A gift from the Frances G. Harpst Trust has funded the project.
El Niño Preparation: In anticipation of a wet winter, the City’s Public Services Department is hiring additional temporary maintenance workers. Applications are being accepted for workers experienced with storm drains and sewers. El Niño is a tropical weather pattern that occurs roughly once every three to seven years. It is characterized by the above-average warming of the surface temperature of the waters in the eastern portion of the Pacific Ocean that results in extreme weather, such as drought or flooding. Forecasters predict Southern California can expect to see a wet winter and marked increase in storms. The City has a new page on its website that will contain emergency response information. It will be an updated resource for residents, businesses and visitors.
Coronado TV Update: In an effort to provide more live programming through the City’s government channel, City advisory boards and commissions will have various meetings broadcast throughout the year. Each commission or board will have at least a half dozen meetings a year televised. The first meetings to be shown are the Bicycle Advisory Committee and Design Review Committee. Both meetings are in the current schedule and will be rebroadcast until new meetings take their place. Look for other commission meetings in the future, as well as a video preview of the City Manager’s Weekly Update. You can check it all out on Time Warner Cable Channel 19 or on AT&T Channel 99.
