- Coronado has decorated Orange Avenue with 125th anniversary banners and flags that are lining Orange Avenue from First Street to the Hotel del Coronado. Large 125 flags are flying in front of City Hall, the Police Station and from a turret at the Hotel del Coronado. The official 125-day countdown to the actual day of the City of Coronado’s incorporation on December 11, 1890, began on Sunday, August 9. The banners have one of 14 different images of places in Coronado painted or photographed by local artists Katerina Ring, Sara Rowe, Dan McGeorge, Glenn McNary and Sue Tushingham McNary. The flags were designed and produced by Coronado’s own University Blanket and Flag Co. and are available for purchase at Coronado Hardware & Glass, University Blanket & Flag Co. and the Museum Store.
Central Beach Restroom Update: Work on the Central Beach Restroom refurbishment project may begin as early as November. The work includes the partial removal of roofing material, removal of termite and dry rot damaged roof framing, installation of new roof framing, new roofing, paint, lighting, epoxy flooring and minor modifications to address Americans with Disabilities Act issues. The project, which will take about 30 days to complete, is moving forward with the award of a construction contract scheduled for the next City Council meeting. Portable restrooms will be provided for use by beach patrons during this work.
Permitted Use of Parks, Beaches: The lists below of permitted uses of the parks and beaches are provided to inform the public about which groups have obtained a permit. Organized groups of 25 or more are required to have a permit to use city parks and beaches. It also provides assurance to a user that they have permission to use the particular location. To report a large unpermitted group, contact the police at (619) 522-7350.
Police Explorer Academy: Six Coronado Police Explorers attended a recent week-long San Diego Law Enforcement Police Explorer Academy. Two-hundred and forty-four police explorers from 25 California law enforcement agencies attended the annual academy, which is held each summer on the campus of UC San Diego. The Explorers live in dorm rooms on campus and train each day. They participate in drill instruction, first aid, traffic control, physical fitness, tactical and patrol operations, team building, and laws of arrest. The Coronado Police Department is proud of its Explorers and would like to congratulate Ivan Gonzalez, Pedro Gonzalez, Julio Munoz, Acacia Pereira, Max Stangl and Rocky Rhys for their great work at the academy.
