Coronado’s Lawn Bowling Club Celebrates 80th Birthday

80th Anniversary and Charity Event

The Coronado Lawn Bowling Club (CLBC) has joined with the City of Coronado in celebration of Coronado 125 and Coronado Celebrates 80 Years of Lawn Bowling. The CLBC is hosting a Community Charity Tournament on September 19, 2015 as a way of giving back to the community, which has supported it since 1935. Event Chairman and inventor of the idea, Javier Gomez, also has the goal of introducing the sport of lawn bowling to more members of organizations, institutions and businesses in Coronado. A mission of the Coronado Lawn Bowling Club is to benefit the community through enhanced opportunities to play the game of lawn bowling.
The event is a 2-Bowl Mixed Triples Tournament in which 16 local community teams will compete for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes. The $60 entry fees for each team ($960) will be saved exclusively for the charity named by the winning team. This amount could be increased as additional event donors are found.

The tournament is completely full and has teams representing the Tavern, Chase Bank, Sacred Heart, Emerald City, the Gensler Group, Coronado Fire Fighters, Coronado Eagle & Journal, Coronado Handyman, Coronado Carpet & Stone, and the Optimist Club of Coronado. Some of the charities that these teams are playing for are: Missionary Childhood Association, Wildcoast, Missionvale USA, San Diego Burn Institute, Coronado Schools Foundation, and the Optimist Club of Coronado.
In the weeks leading up to the tournament, these brand new, novice teams have been encouraged to practice on Thursday nights during the CLBC’s Twilight Open Bowling events.

The CLBC is now seeking additional charitable donations to increase the prizes for the charities as well as restaurants that might be willing to provide lunch and other refreshments for the hard working teams during the event. Spectators are more than welcome to come and enjoy this free event and to cheer on a favorite team. The event takes place from 8:15am to 3pm on the Coronado Lawn Bowling Green at 7th and D Ave. For additional information, contact Javier Gomez at [email protected] or leave a call back message at 619-319-5509.
