CHS Students to Lead Sailing Camp with a STEM Focus

CHS students Owen Schafer and Grace Yakutis teach middle school students about the scientific principles of sailing.

Coronado High School Sailing teammates Owen Schafer and Grace Yakutis will teach local children about the science of sailing and instruct them on use of sail boats during an exciting “Sailing through STEM” camp this summer.

During spring break this past April, Owen and Grace ran a half-day course at the Coronado Yacht Club called “Sailing through STEM” (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). They recruited twelve Coronado Middle School students to participate in the event. The morning consisted of labs involving buoyancy and weight, followed by time on actual boats, enjoying experimentation on the water. Mr. Kevin Ramirez, science teacher at CMS, observed the lesson and joined the students during the sailing portion of the day.

CHS student Owen Schafer demonstrates buoyancy using an everyday item students recognize.

This course served as a preview for the four-day camp that Owen and Grace will lead from July 6-9, 2015. They will discuss many topics, including buoyancy, pulleys, and wind measurement, while also providing a comfortable learning environment for rising 7th and 8th graders to experiment by trial and error. They will also be teaching the fundamentals of sailing through games and drills so the students can experience the joy of sailing for themselves. The entire experience should be both educational and fun!

CHS student Grace Yakutis instructs campers on the safety and skills of sailing.

Owen and Grace have been sailing since elementary school. They started in summer camps at CYC and now compete at the local and national levels. They are both especially interested in the science and engineering of sailing and have completed the US Sailing REACH Educator Course in STEM education for middle school students. They are also US Sailing Level 1 Small Boat Instructors and are looking forward to sharing their knowledge and love of sailing.
