Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.
Upcoming April Special Events
The 2015 Coronado Flower Show is next weekend, April 18 and 19. Event setup and preparation will begin Monday, April 13, in Spreckels Park and continue throughout the entire week. The event will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 19. “No Parking Tow Away” signs will be posted beginning next week on portions of Orange Avenue, Sixth Street and C Avenue around the park to restrict parking before and during the event. Affected residences and businesses in the vicinity of the event on Isabella Avenue, Park Place and Star Park Circle were mailed notification letters 30 days in advance of the event, and will be notified again the week before the event.
Navy’s Coastal Campus
The Notice for the Final Environmental Impact Statement for the Naval Base Coronado Coastal Campus proposal was published on Friday, April 3, and is available to be viewed or downloaded at www.NBCCoastalCampusEIS.com. The document identifies Alternative 1, the Silver Strand Training Complex-South Bunker Demolition Alternative, as the preferred alternative. The Navy said it was selected as the preferred alternative because it provides an additional 4.6 acres of available developable area allowing for the optimal design of the coastal campus, including the internal road network, building orientation, and flow of personnel and operations. The publication and notification of the document initiates a 30-day waiting period, after which the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Energy Installations and Environment, will issue a Record of Decision. To view the Navy’s responses to the public’s comments, go to Appendix A of the document. Printed copies of the final document are available at the Coronado Public Library, 640 Orange Ave.

City staff will evaluate the proposal at a public meeting at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, at City Hall, 1825 Strand Way. The City has created a notification package that will be going out to local residents, who can provide their opinions regarding the proposal.
Sewer and Alley Improvement Project
Work began this week on the Sewer and Alley Improvement Project in the alley between Orange and D avenues and Second and Third streets. Night work within the California Department of Transportation right of way on Third, adjacent to the alley between Orange and D, is scheduled to take place from Sunday, April 12, through Wednesday, April 15. Work on Sunday will begin at 4 p.m. and go on until midnight. Lastly, after all sewer installation work is complete in the alleys, the contractor will work on the sewer main replacement on Miguel Avenue from Pomona to San Luis Rey avenues.
Coronado Gateway Project
More than 341 people have taken a survey to provide their feedback on a project to transform the state Route 75 toll booth plaza into the Coronado Gateway. The goal is to create a community vision for a gateway that represents the beauty, history and character of Coronado. The study has resulted in strong opinions either way about keeping the large wing over the toll plaza area. It’s not too late to provide your opinions on the matter.
