Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.
Bicycle Safety News
In bicycle news, the City was selected for a pedestrian and bicycle safety assessment, and is looking for input for upcoming street maintenance tied into street bicycle marking.
Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Assessments: The City was selected to receive a free Pedestrian Safety Assessment and Bicycle Safety Assessment through the Technology Transfer Program of the Institute of Transportation Studies at UC Berkeley. The program provides free technical assistance to a select number of local agencies throughout California and is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Researchers were in the field last Thursday and Friday, March 12 and 13, and will be compiling a report that includes suggestions for how the City of Coronado can improve bicycle and pedestrian safety.
Street Maintenance and Bicycle Markings Online Questionnaire: The City is beginning to design this year’s Street Preventive Maintenance project. During construction, the project will fix minor potholes and damaged asphalt and place a “slurry seal” along the pavement surface along several streets scheduled for regular maintenance. This year, bicycle safety markings, as called out in the City’s Bicycle Master Plan, are proposed to be incorporated at the conclusion of the maintenance work. The City is seeking community input on this public safety initiative. Learn more about the project and let us know what you think by filling out this following online questionnaire.
Sewer Main Line Work
Work is complete on a project, which began Monday, March 16, to repair a City sewer main line located at the intersection of Tenth Street and C Avenue. Traffic was diverted when necessary and the intersection closed intermittently as work was underway.
Free Paper Shredding Event for Residents
A free paper-shredding event has been scheduled for Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the parking lot next to City Hall, 1825 Strand Way. EDCO funds the event. All recyclable material brought to the event will be diverted from the trash heading to the landfill.
Caltrans Street Repairs
The California Department of Transportation worked Tuesday, March 17, to make temporary repairs to the northbound Orange Avenue left turn pocket and also to the area at the intersection of Third Street and D Avenue. The City notified Caltrans of the dangerous potholes that were developing. Because Third Street is a state highway, Caltrans is not required to provide advance notice of its work.
Historic Resource Commission
At its meeting on Wednesday, March 18, the Historic Resource Commission designated the property at 924 H Ave. as a Historic Resource in association with a nomination of historic designation. The Commission also recommended approval of a Mills Act agreement for the property at 535 Ocean Blvd.; and determined that the property at 700 Tenth St. does not meet the criteria to be designated as a Historic Resource in association with a “Notice of Intent to Demolish” application.
