The Coronado High School Competition Cheer Team returned home this weekend after winning first place in the Co-Ed Advanced Varsity division at the Fullout Cheer Challenge Cheerleading Competition. The 25-member team made up of cheerleaders from the Junior Varsity and Varsity high school teams, has been working hard preparing since August for their competition season that started in January. This was the team’s second of three competitions, and they have took first place in their division in both competitions thus far. The team is being coached by Joyce Winter and Ted Good, both accomplished cheerleaders, choreographers, and coaches. Winter said she was especially proud of her team after this competition because not only did they win their division, but out of all the high schools (which included 16 teams), only 2 other schools scored higher than Coronado. “Granite Hills High School and Academy of Our Lady of Peace have a history of strong, winning competition teams, and to be in contention with those schools was quite remarkable,” Winter stated. There was only 6 tenths of a point between Coronado and the overall winning high school team of Granite Hills.
The team will compete at their third and final competition in mid-March at the “Best of the West” cheer competition in Long Beach. This will be the biggest and most challenging competition for the team. They will continue to practice and work to improve their tumbling, jumping, dancing, and stunting skills while hoping for their final win.
