Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.
Sales Tax Report for Third Quarter 2014
Coronado’s July through September 2014 sale tax update has been released. The report is produced by HDL Companies. Unlike many other communities that depend heavily on fourth-quarter holiday sales, the City of Coronado’s strongest sales quarter is the third quarter, which reflects the busy tourist season. Receipts for the third quarter were up 19 percent compared to the same quarter in 2013. The summer season saw a 6.9 percent increase in restaurants and hotels overall. San Diego County as a whole saw an increase of 4.9 percent in taxable sales over the comparable time period. Restaurants and hotels are Coronado’s biggest sales tax generators. A copy of the Third Quarter Sales Tax Update report, describing Coronado sales by business group as well as state-wide results, can be found on the City’s website.
Barrier Netting Project Signs
Signs have gone up at the Golf Course to remind the community about work on the #15 tee barrier netting project. However, work is not set to begin for another few weeks. The barrier netting will be installed to deflect golf balls from entering Coronado Tennis Center courts and surrounding areas. The work should take approximately 6-8 weeks, depending on conditions. The work is anticipated to be completed by early April. The work may cause a minor disruption to golfers, and will impact some tennis program.
Dock C/Boat Launch Public Hearing
A public hearing to consider initial environmental study documents for the Glorietta Bay Marina Dock C and Boat Launch Ramp Renovation Project was held at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, February 3. The City Council agreed to circulate a Mitigated Negative Declaration for a 30-day period for comments. The Council selected design Option 2 as the preferred dock design for the boat launch facility. (See image below). The project involves demolition of existing improvements and construction of new facilities within Glorietta Bay. Dock C is deteriorating and does not meet local, state and federal standards. The project will also replace and upgrade the Boat Launch Ramp, expand non-motorized boating opportunities, and improve boat wash-off facilities. The initial environmental study documents are available for public review at City Hall, the Library and on the City’s website under Community Development, Current Projects, or click here. For further information regarding this project, contact Jerome Torres, Senior Management Analyst, at (619) 522-7305, or Ann McCaull, Senior Planner at (619) 522-7326.

Your thoughts and ideas will help create a vision for a gateway into Coronado.
Cays Berm Stabilization
The contractor working on the Cays Berm Stabilization project began placing sand this week in the Cays waterways to stabilize the seawall on Green Turtle and Sandpiper Strand. Next week, work will take place on Catspaw Cape and Antigua Court. A total of 150 cubic yards of sand will be placed in the waterways to stabilize the bulkhead in various locations with construction scheduled to be completed by next week.
Coronado Valentine’s Day 10K/1 Mile Fun Run
The fifth annual Coronado Valentine’s Day 10K and 1 Mile Fun Run will be held on Sunday, February 15, at Tidelands Park. Approximately 2,000 runners will gather in Tidelands Park and take off on a route that will take them onto the Bayshore Bikeway, under the San Diego-Coronado Bridge to Glorietta Boulevard. The event will take up the northbound half of Glorietta Boulevard, only allowing for vehicle traffic to proceed south towards the Hotel del Coronado. There will be right-turn-only road signs and cones along Glorietta to ensure traffic does not travel north from 7 a.m. to approximately 10 a.m. The event passes the Coronado Yacht Club and then turns onto Strand Way, using both Strand Way and the Bayshore Bikeway. Participants then head to Glorietta Bay Park, where they turn back to Tidelands via the same route. The entrance to Pomona Avenue off of Silver Strand Boulevard will be closed at 7 a.m. to allow for course set-up. All residents and businesses in the affected areas will begin to receive notifications in the near future. The Coronado Yacht Club, Coronado Municipal Golf Course, Seaforth Marina and the Coronado Tennis Center have been notified and will be notified again before the event.
Navy Traffic, Training Advisories
Two advisories were issued this week by the Navy. The first one reminds the community that large trucks will be moving sand across state Route 75 (Silver Strand) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Tuesday, February 10, near Fiddler’s Cove. Any questions regarding the sand movement project should be directed to the Naval Base Coronado Public Affairs office at (619) 545-8136. Additionally, the Navy is conducting a nationwide force protection training exercise this week and next, including at San Diego-area bases and installations. This is an annual event called Exercise Solid Curtain/Citadel Shield that is held “to enhance the training and readiness of Navy security personnel to respond to threats to installations and units.” There may be times when the exercise causes increased traffic around bases or delays in base access. For more information, call Brian O’Rourke at Navy Region Southwest, (619) 532-4717. Finally, the Navy is conducting small boat training during the day and evenings of February 10-12 on San Diego Bay in the vicinity of Naval Amphibious Base Coronado. Expect to hear blank gunfire during these training exercises.
