Highlights from the City Manager’s Weekly Update: Crime Alert — String of Car Burglaries

Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.

Wayfinding Signage Program

Sunday, February 1, is the deadline for providing comments on a preliminary report for a Wayfinding Signage Program for improved vehicle, pedestrian and bicyclist signage. Before commenting, participants may want to check out temporary mock-up signs at the following locations: 1) Vehicle sign near Alameda Boulevard and Country Club Lane; 2) Pedestrian sign on Strand Way near the Pocket Park next to the Coronado Yacht Club; 3) Bicycle sign on the Bayshore Bikeway between City Hall and the Community Center. The City welcomes public comments and suggestions on the program and mock-up signs. Please note that the permanent signs will be built with sturdier material. Visit the City’s website for more details on submitting comments. Dock C/Boat Launch Public Hearing

A public hearing to consider initial environmental study documents for the Glorietta Bay Marina Dock C and Boat Launch Ramp Renovation Project is set for Tuesday, February 3. The hearing at the 4 p.m. City Council meeting also will determine what type of environmental review is required. See full Public Notice here. The project involves demolition of existing improvements and construction of new facilities within Glorietta Bay. Dock C is deteriorating and does not meet local, state and federal standards. The project will also replace and upgrade the Boat Launch Ramp, expand non-motorized boating opportunities, and improve boat wash-off facilities. The environmental review is available for public review at City Hall, the Library and on the City’s website under Community Development, Current Projects. For further information regarding this project, contact Jerome Torres, Senior Management Analyst, at (619) 522-7305, or Ann McCaull, Senior Planner at (619) 522-7326.

City Receives Bicycle Mini-Grant

The City was recently awarded a Bike Month Mini-Grant from the San Diego Association of Governments’ iCommute Program. The goal of the SANDAG grant is to encourage and support National Bike Month events and activities that promote bicycling. The mini-grant will help support the third annual Coronado Bicycle Rodeo and Safe Cycling Festival which will be held in May 2015. The event is organized by the Bicycle Advisory Committee each year and includes an interactive, hands-on rodeo component that allows participants to practice their safe bicycling skills, along with opportunities to register bikes, learn bike maintenance tips and win prizes.

Stormwater Requirements

Coronado has numerous paved surfaces that can quickly move pollutants picked up by rainwater into storm drains then into local bay and ocean waters. Property owners are responsible for managing runoff, including rainfall, which falls on their property. Contractors, developers and, ultimately property owners, are also required to manage runoff during and after any building process by following established requirements, set out in the Storm Water Best Management Practices Design Manual for the San Diego Region. These requirements apply to single family development, commercial buildings and simple addition projects, and will have far-reaching consequences. The design manual is a requirement of national standards that govern how much pollution is allowed to be discharged into local waters. To view and comment on the draft manual, please visit the Project Clean Water website. See Public Comment Period letter here. For more information on the requirements as they relate to Coronado, contact Kim Godby at (619) 522-7387 or Jim Newton at (619) 522-7313. Comments must be received no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, February 20.

Senior Volunteers Honored

The Coronado Police Department honored Senior Volunteer Patrol members last week. Volunteers were recognized for their service to the Department, the City, and the community. Their service comes at a substantial cost savings to the City. John Moorhouse and Art O’Brien were especially acknowledged for their each having committed 20 years of service with the Senior Volunteer Patrol. In 1995, Sgt. Kevin Shank developed the program as a way for local seniors to make a difference in their community while partnering with law enforcement. The first volunteer academy had 18 recruits. The Police Department is honored to be able to work with such amazing men and women.

Bike Registration Aids in Theft Suspect ID

Last month, an alert resident reported a suspicious man in the 500 block of Ocean Boulevard. Officers responded and contacted a 48-year-old San Diego resident. The man was questioned regarding his activity and ultimately released. However, during the contact, officers noted the man was in possession of a bicycle and recorded its description and serial number. Later in the day, Coronado Police took a bicycle theft report. The victim had recently registered her bicycle using the Department’s online bike registration application and was able to provide a detailed description of her bike, including the serial number. Detectives were able to look at this information, connect the two incidents, and identify a suspect. The case remains under investigation as detectives continue their search for the suspect, who is believed to be transient.

Crime Alert and Crime Prevention Tips

Several vehicles were burglarized earlier this week; all but one of the vehicles was unlocked. The crimes took place overnight in the Village and one in Silver Strand Housing. Some of the items taken were loose change, prescription glasses, an airport parking permit, gloves, a phone charger, and shoes. From the crooks viewpoint, there is a wide variety of merchandise inside an unlocked and unoccupied vehicles; it’s low risk because most vehicle burglaries are misdemeanors; it’s hard to get caught because it happens overnight; and the stolen items are easy to sell. The Coronado Police Department offers these tips on how to avoid being a victim:

  • Lock your vehicle. Yes, criminals can break a window, but it takes time and makes a lot of noise.
  • Take all items with you. Even if you think the item isn’t valuable, it still may attract the criminal element.
  • If your glove box has a lock, use it. You do not want thieves obtaining your vehicle registration and insurance information.
  • Purchase a car alarm.
