Coronado Islanders Rugby defeats Valhalla in final division match

Islanders Rugby continued their undefeated season Saturday with a road victory over the Valhalla Norsemen. The Norsemen took an early 10-0 lead. After a slow start, the Islanders began to show signs of life with better defense and a quickening pace. The Islanders scrum-half, #9 Nate Rizos, would score the Islanders first try with a faked pass and quick run narrowing the score to 10-5 at the half. The Norsemen widened their lead again to 15-5 with a quick try at the beginning of the second half. After one of the Islanders was given a yellow card and sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes, Coronado was forced to play with one less player. However, the Islanders regrouped and quickly moved the ball down field and captain, #2 Seth Trujillo, was able to punch in a try that shrank the lead to 5 points. Fly-half #10 Wyatt Trujillo added 2 more points with a conversion further shrinking the Norsemen lead to 3 points. With less than 10 minutes remaining, Wyatt Trujillo pinned the Norsemen deep in their own territory with a beautiful kick, speedy chase and tackle. The stage was set but the Valhalla defense would not bend. With only 2 minutes left and after repeated attempts to break through a staunch Norsemen defense, outside-center #13 Dan Komorowski scored the winning try by sprinting around the outside and outrunning two defenders. The final score was 17-15 and the Islanders are now 4-0 with their last division match completed. They will be playing outside of their division next week in a round robin competition against Temecula, Rancho Bernardo and Poway.
