Coronado Rugby Wins Again

Coronado runs in 11 tries in their match against Hoover.

Saturday’s match was in many ways a match between the Hoover high school football team and Islanders Rugby team. Hoover was a very large team with lots of talented football players but the Islanders rugby knowledge, speed and commitment to their teammates would rule the day. In total the Coronado Islanders crossed the try line 11 times, with Hoover only able to respond with a pair of hard earned tries.

Coronado came out of the gate moving the ball well with amazing tackles and strong commitment at the ruck. At the 2 minutes mark the scrum half, #9 Nate Rizos, faked a pass, side-stepped two tacklers and then sprinted 60 meters for the Islanders first of many scores. Rizos would finish the day with 2 tries and be recognized as the back-players man-of-the-match.

With many strong runs and solid defense #6 Frank Glauser, would score his first of two tries while earning the forward-players man-of-the-match award. In the 20th minute the Islanders Captain, #1 Seth Trujillo broke away and sprinted down the sideline and just before he was tackled, he pooch-kicked the ball and it was recovered for try by newcomer #14 Jerry Nutter. This would be his first try for the season. #2 Josh Blila and #15 Ezequiel Jimenez would also have break-away tries in the second half while scoring their first tries as well for the season. Seth Trujillo would have one try and five conversions. #13 Dan Komorowski would finish the day as the leading scorer with 4 tries.

Hoover scored 2 tries by sheer force but they were consistently smothered by the Islanders defense and were unable to match their pace.

Islanders Rugby would like to thank CrossFit Coronado, Vigilucci’s, Vitality Chiropractic and OMBAC Rugby for their continued support with starting a rugby program in Coronado. The Islanders are away next Saturday at the Valhalla with a 5 pm kick-off.
