CORONADO-The Coronado Islanders rugby inaugural home game started with a decisive victory over Mira Mesa on Saturday at Coronado Cays Field.
The game started off evenly matched with Mira Mesa having a notable size advantage and lots of aggressive play. After ten-minutes of mostly even play the Islanders Captain Seth Trujillo made some key adjustments and the Islanders put their foot on the gas pedal, scoring three times before the first half leading 15-5.
The Islanders continued the second half with its smothering defense while adding another try from its newcomer Dan Komoroski. The Islanders Scrum-Half Nathan Rizos had a brilliant run adding another try and Wyatt Trujillo hit a long conversion adding two more points. After a Marauder penalty near their try-line Adam McNeil took a quick-restart driving the ball in for his first try of the season. Another newcomer Josh Espindola came in from the reserves scoring a try securing the win for the Islanders at 27-5.
Hyrum Dunford was the man-of-the match for the forward-players and was the leading tackler for the day. Frank Glauser was an honorable mention and had the second most tackles. Dan Komoroski was the Islanders man-of-the-match for the back-players scoring two tries and is currently the Islanders scoring leader with 15 points over two matches.
This was former Coronado Islanders student Francisco Jimenez‘s first match as a rugby coach. He is the Forwards Coach and currently playing Division-1 rugby for OMBAC. His brother Ezequiel is the Islanders starting Full-Back and also had numerous break-away runs.
