CORONADO – American actor and director Dermot Mulroney surprised patrons at McP’s Irish Pub Sunday when he and a small entourage assembled there on the outdoor patio.

They enjoyed their anonymity for about two rounds of drinks before his fans began to notice.

Mulroney is known to many for his role on TV’s “Friends,” and more recently on NBC’s “Crisis.” His big screen successes include “Young Guns,” “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “The Last Outlaw,” “About Schmidt,” and “August: Osage County.”

McP’s Irish Pub, located at 1107 Orange Avenue, is a traditional Irish eatery and bar serving Coronado since July 30, 1982. The outdoor patio has become popular for its dog-friendly atmosphere. Photo by Joe Ditler.

He has also had fame on the other side of the camera as a successful director. One of the new breed of Renaissance actors, Mulroney is also an world-class cellist, with his music accompanying many film scores, including last year’s “Star Trek: Into Darkness.”

The actor blended in nicely with the McP’s crowd gathered to hear Ron’s Garage perform. He and his group sat at the Prince Harry Table and enjoyed McP’s hospitality and music for a couple of hours.

“He was just the nicest guy you could ever hope to meet,” said Lisa Dettmann, a McP’s customer who posed for a photo with the actor. “They seemed to have a really good time,” said Susan Koelle, who, with Dettmann, sat at the adjoining table. “They talked about screenplays and current projects the whole time,” said Koelle.

McP’s had a celebrity of a different color in October. United States Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner spent the entire afternoon there listening to Ron’s Garage perform on the outdoor patio.
