Fourth Annual Veterans’ Day Bake Sale for Wounded Warriors is set for November 11, 2014

Jessie, Jamie and Katie Hearther started their bake sale in 2011 as a way to help wounded service members.

The Fourth Annual Veterans’ day bake sale for Wounded Warriors will be Tuesday, November 11, 2014 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

After humble beginnings three years ago, in an effort to make a difference on a day so revered for remembering those who have served or are serving our country, Jessie, Katie and Jamie Hearther’s bake sale fundraiser has evolved into a true community event. Over the last three years, locals and visitors have been extremely generous, supporting the girls with donations in exchange for yummy treats. This year the event will be bigger than ever! More people involved transfers to a larger donation to two organizations who serve injured and recovering service members of our military.

“Attending our bake sale has no down side. You can make a donation and eat awesome baked goods and all the money goes to a great cause,” said Katie Hearther, a junior at Coronado High school and the reigning Miss Teen Coronado. “Sometimes people have thought of giving and didn’t know how and our bake sale provides that opportunity.”

You can visit the bake sale at the usual corner of 10th Street and E Avenue.

For the first time, the bake sale will have two locations. Please visit the girls at the usual location on the corner of 10th Street and E Avenue or come get some delicious baked goods at the Historic Glenn Curtiss home (301 Alameda Blvd.) immediately following the dedication of the Avenue of Heroes Banner program.

You can also visit the bake sale at 301 Alameda immediately following the 10 a.m. dedication of the Avenue of Heroes banner program.

Brainstorming ideas to increase the size and depth of the bake sale resulted in the Hearther sisters reaching out to local bakers. They have teamed up with local residents; four fantastic bakers, one author and celebrity, and one amazing yoga instructor. These six women have agreed to donate their resources, time and products to help the girls reach their goal of well over $1,000 raised this year.

In addition to the yearly offerings of pumpkin mochi, chocolate chip brownies, banana muffins, oreo truffles, citrus sugar cookies, rice krispy treats, oatmeal cookies and more, you will be able to make a donation and enjoy yummy treats from the following:

Melissa Bowlby of Gluten Free in IB will be bringing three different gluten free items, two of those items being dairy free as well. Melissa lives with Celiac disease and is, therefore, very familiar with how to effectively and safely ensure that her items are completely free of gluten. Check out her offerings at www.facebook.com/glutenfreeinib.

Allison Borszich of Crown City Bread Company has a great following on Facebook and creates delicious mini bread loaves. She offers different flavors each month and her breads never disappoint. [email protected]

Robbins Kelly, long time Coronado resident, and owner of Robbins Rum Cakes will be baking her mini rum cakes for the annual event. If you haven’t had the pleasure of tasting one of these amazing cakes, then you don’t want to miss this opportunity. Her cakes are divine. See what they look like at www.robbinsrumcakes.com

Jennifer Reynolds, also a Coronado resident, is the owner of Big City Bagels in Hillcrest (voted best bagels in San Diego for 2014) and has graciously offered to bake assorted breads and muffins featured at their University Avenue shop and five coffee carts on the SDSU campus. www.bcbcompany.com

In addition to the baked goods, you can start your day on the magnificent Coronado beach with a yoga class lead by local resident, parent and yoga instructor Mary Farley. Mary and the girls teamed up in 2012 and will do so again this year. Meet just before 8:30 a.m. across from Sunset Park. Treat your mind, body and soul to a wonderful hour of yoga and then come fill your belly with baked treats at the bake sale! All donations for yoga on Veterans’ day will go toward the bake sale totals.

Are you watching your carbs or not a fan of baked goods? Even yoga can’t entice you? That’s okay! Everyone who makes a donation to the bake sale (at either location) will be entered in a drawing for a raffle prize. A huge thank you goes out to Coronado resident and Food Network star Melissa D’Arabian for donating a signed copy of her cookbook “Ten Dollar Dinners”. The drawing will be held at the end of the bake sale (need not be present to win) and the winner will be notified by phone.

Setting up for the bake sale in 2013. There is always lots of patriotism and plenty of energy!

All baked goods will be offered on a donation basis and every dollar made will be donated to Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) and the Naval Medical Center San Diego Recreation Therapy Program. WWP’s motto is “The greatest casualty is being forgotten.” With the invention of better body armor and protection for our service members, the number of injured returning home from the battlefield is nearly six times that from the first two world wars. Reintegration into every day life can be extremely challenging. Both the WWP and the Recreation Therapy program at NMCSD help address healing for the whole person.

As daughters of a US Navy active duty sailor, Katie, Jamie and Jessie recognize the sacrifices made by not only the service members, but by their families as well. They have witnessed, first hand, how battlefield injuries affect the service member and the family. Their annual bake sale is an opportunity for them to make a difference in their community (with the local donation to NMCSD) and beyond (with the donation to WWP).

When asked why she continues doing the bake sale, CMS Sixth grader Jessie Hearther echoed her sentiment from previous years, “It’s Veterans’ day and it feels good to give back to people who have given us so much.”

CHS freshman Jamie Hearther added, “It’s a great family event for us and for those who attend. It is a challenge to get everything organized but it’s also a lot of fun.”
