Highlights from the City Manager’s Weekly Update: Portable Restroom Unveiled

Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.

Coronado Schools Are Back in Session

The City sent out a reminder that students are back to school this week and that drivers should be aware that children will be out and about. Many children use bikes to get to school and will be sharing the roads with morning and afternoon commuters. Our children’s safety is a top concern in Coronado. The City prepared for the start of school on various fronts. Coronado provided a map and a “Safe Routes to School – Parent Info Sheet” to the schools to help parents get their children safely to school. The map shows schools, traffic signals and crossing guard locations. As part of a grant-funded Safe Routes to School program, the City recently painted white bike lanes on Sixth Street in both directions for a safer ride to area schools. The Coronado Police also are involved, handing out gift certificates to bicyclists following the rules of the road and properly wearing their helmets. This effort began last year and was a success. Recreation Services Teen Staff participated in the Coronado Unified School District’s new family “Back to School Night” on Tuesday night, August 19, at the Coronado Middle School. This was an opportunity for new families in Coronado to learn about organizations and opportunities within the community. City staff provided information promote teen programs.

Portable Restroom Being Prepped

The City’s new portable restroom trailer is currently in the Public Services Yard, where it has had the lights and all other external appurtenances removed to make it ready for the wrap. Earlier this year, a wrap with graphics simulating a historic Tent City tent with photos of guests and beachgoers was approved. The wrap installation was completed late yesterday afternoon. Public Services will reinstall all the exterior components, transport it to the predetermined location at the beach, connect it to the site’s electrical service, lower it into place and the trailer should be ready for use on Monday, August 25. The facility will be portable and appearing around town, where needed. The design was developed by the City’s Cultural Arts Commission.

Proper Bike Locking PSA

Check out the City of Coronado’s newest Public Service Announcement, “How to Properly Lock Your Bike,” and learn the techniques that will help keep your bicycle safe. The video includes a number of bike security tips, including advice on the best way to lock a bike to a rack and what you should do to make it easier to recover your bike if it is stolen. Regarding bike thefts, two more people were arrested in Coronado on bike theft charges, bringing the total to 13 suspects taken into custody for being in possession of the Coronado Police Department’s remotely monitored bicycle since the operation began in early July. The two were arrested Wednesday, August 20, at about 8:40 p.m. The bike was located in the suspects’ vehicle after Coronado officers stopped their car in San Diego. The suspects were charged with grand theft, possession of stolen property and conspiracy. Both were transported to jail. Watch this important PSA by clicking on the image below.

Wayfinding Directional Signs

This week, City staff held a meeting with 20 members of a stakeholder group assisting the City in developing a signage program to improve wayfinding by vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians. The City’s consultant will be refining the signage concepts based on input received and will schedule another meeting in about one month. In the interim, City staff will be meeting with the California Department of Transportation to discuss the program as many of the signs will be located on Caltrans property.

Fountains Vandalized

Two fountains – Coronado Rotary Plaza and Promenade Park – were vandalized in recent weeks. Both fountains had to be drained and cleaned after vandals placed soap in the water. It may seem like a harmless prank, but soap harms the pumps when they get “air locked” with suds. When the pumps are air locked, no water is going through them as the pumps are running or circulating water. They then overheat. Clean-up efforts cost the City in staff time plus replacement equipment. The fountains recycle the water, making them highly water-efficient. However, when soap is placed in a fountain, it must be completely drained and refilled. This wastes the water that was being recycled and requires the use of more water to refill the fountains. Both fountains were cleaned and are up and running.
