Highlights from the City Manager’s Weekly Update: Slurry seal work to begin

Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.

Summer Shuttle Ridership News and Bus Schedule: Ridership is up on Coronado’s free Summer Shuttle, according to officials with the Metropolitan Transit System. In fact, the Summer Shuttle in Coronado is MTS’ highest performing route in terms of passengers carried per hour of operation. This is great news and a testament to the success of the service. It also shows that people are taking the bus rather than a vehicle, helping to reduce traffic on the City’s already congested summertime streets. Ridership in July 2014 through July 24 averaged 18.2 passengers per trip, up from 11.6 in June 2014. In other news, the City has created a handy schedule for Coronado’s free Summer Shuttle Bus, which is available on the bus and for distribution to hotels, motels and businesses that are interested. Contact Janine Zuniga at (619) 522-7340 for more information. The Free Summer Shuttle runs on a 30-minute schedule and is served by two buses that run simultaneously. Remember that buses heading south on Orange Avenue from the Coronado Ferry Landing will make a scheduled stop at the Coronado Shores (near City Hall) for approximately 20 minutes. Check this schedule for all your trips to ensure you get to your appointment or dinner reservation on time. The schedule is online and also can be viewed here.

Police, Firefighter and Lifeguard of the Year: On Wednesday evening, July 30, the Coronado Chamber of Commerce held its recognition event honoring this year’s Police Officer, Firefighter, and Lifeguard of the Year. Officer Jordan Good of the Police Department, Engineer Scott Stepanof of the Fire Department, and Lifeguard Robert Phelps were the nominees from Coronado. These men were nominated by their peers for going above and beyond in their everyday commitment to their Departments and the City, and inspiring others to attain this level of performance.

Slurry Seal Work to Begin: The annual slurry sealing of certain City streets is set to begin soon. Preparations are being made this week for the job to begin. The project will include the slurry sealing of E Avenue, from First Street to Isabella Avenue; F Avenue, from First to Ocean Boulevard; G Avenue, from First to Tenth Street; and H Avenue, from First to Olive Avenue. A slurry seal is a type of seal coat composed of asphalt emulsion, fine aggregates, mineral filler, various additives, and water, all of which are mixed and applied from a truck. It is a cost-effective and proven way to extend the life of roads. Once applied, the slurry will fill small surface cracks, stop raveling and improve the skid resistance of the pavement. The majority of work will occur between now and August 16. The contractor is required to place notifications on the doors of all properties along the affected streets a minimum of three days before any work begins. “No Parking” signs will also be posted in advance of the work. All streets will be open at the end of the work day and once safe to do so. For questions, contact Tony Mendoza, Engineering Technician at (619) 522-7384 or [email protected]. Residential Fire Updates:

  • Residential Fire – Glorietta Boulevard: On Wednesday, July 23, Fire Department personnel responded to a residential fire in the 700 block of Glorietta Boulevard in the back unattached residence. Coronado Engine 36 arrived at a two-story single family home and found the fire at the rear of the property in a guest house with an attached enclosed patio. Firefighters quickly contained the fire to the enclosed patio and protected the surrounding residential homes. Approximately 10 minutes after arrival, the fire was completely extinguished. No occupants were injured and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
  • Residential Fire – C Avenue: On Friday, July 25, Fire Department personnel responded to a kitchen fire in the 500 block of C Avenue. Battalion 53, Engine 36, and Medic 36 arrived to find a single-story residential home with light smoke coming from the front door. Firefighters found a partially extinguished kitchen fire with several occupants inside the home. Approximately five minutes after arrival the fire was completely extinguished. One occupant suffered smoke inhalation and was transported to the hospital. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

The Library has an App for That: The Coronado Library has a new app available for downloading that gives users access to the Library’s catalog, databases and accounts. Access and download e-books or e-audio through Overdrive in one step. Renew borrowed items, place holds, check upcoming programs, view location and hours open. Scan the ISBN barcode of any book in a store and Boopsie will automatically scan the Coronado Public Library catalog for the title to let you know whether the Library has the title in its collection. Search for Coronado Library in your app store.

Bike Thief Arrested: On Tuesday, July 29, at approximately 8:25 p.m., Coronado Police arrested a man suspected of stealing a remotely monitored bicycle belonging to the Department. The arrest occurred in the 1600 block of Glorietta Boulevard. The man was booked into the San Diego County Jail for grand theft, receiving stolen property, and possession of burglary tools. This is the sixth bicycle thief arrested in the last two weeks by the Coronado Police Department.

Beach Signs: Coronado Eagle Scouts are currently working on a prototype beach kiosk sign for North Beach. Led by Eagle Scout Zachary Mishky, in conjunction with Coronado’s Streets Department, the Eagle Scouts are installing a beach kiosk sign that will display beach rules and current lifeguard beach alerts. The work is nearly complete. The City appreciates all that the Eagle Scouts do for the community and support the important skills and lessons they are learning through service.

Coronado Rotary Plaza Wi-Fi: The Wi-Fi at Coronado Rotary Plaza is back on. The City’s IT guys just gave us the good news. Service was out last week due to a malfunctioning Internet modem. A new part was shipped, installed and now, less than a week later, service is back. Thanks to the community for your patience.
