I have loved the Muppets since I was a child and this movie did not change that. They are silly and funny and even though sometimes the jokes create a groan, often times they create a laugh or smile. I like to be entertained and though this movie seemed a bit slow at times, it was entertaining.
Disney has managed to keep the old jokes and familiar Muppets part of the story while also integrating what they so brilliantly do in all their movies intended for families; jokes that only the parents will understand mixed in with songs and jokes for the children. My daughter laughed out loud at certain parts and I at others, and sometimes we were laughing together.
Kidnapped and committed to the gulag in snowy Siberia, mistaken for the world’s most dangerous frog, Kermit is alone and forgotten. Can the Muppets really be so dense that they don’t realize an imposter is filling in for their beloved director and leader? Well, maybe!
In true Muppet style, there are plenty of cameos by stars that both parents and children will recognize. Is that really Ray Liotta? Did I see Tom Hiddleston? Tina Fey is hilarious, Ricky Gervais as slimy as he’s supposed to be and Ty Burrell just plain funny.
It’s a movie that you can watch and enjoy with younger children, but it’s also a movie that could generate conversation with older children. The Muppets fail to realize that the villain (a striking resemblance to Kermit) is not Kermit because he is not questioning anything they propose. He is simply agreeing with them, not leading them. In our family we often discuss that “just because you can, it doesn’t mean you should.” That may be reaching, but it really is an underlying theme. The Muppets are seeing what they want to see and, therefore, falling victim to the movie’s two criminal minds.
Written by James Bobin and Nicholas Stoller and directed by Bobin, Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted” is an adventure, comedy and crime film that will please Muppet lovers everywhere. My daughter and I were hoping for some laughs, some good clean fun and we were not disappointed.
The cozy venue at Vintage Village Theatre was filled with parents and children, but also some adult couples. Eleven year old movie goer Jessie said that “it was funny how clueless they all were. It was good.”
When asked what he thought about the movie, adult movie goer Mike said, “Totally stupid, but delightful.” Enough said.
