Hollywood came to the Crown City on Oscar night. The Coronado Island Film Festival hosted the first annual Red Carpet Oscar Party Sunday evening at Nicky Rottens, a dazzling affair boasting all of Hollywood’s glamour.
Planning for the event began in fall 2013, which served as the CIFF’s first official fundraiser. Event chair Carolyn Ayres, the CIFF staff, and a team of approximately 30 volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure every detail was perfect.
And perfect it was. Red carpet arrivals were photographed in front of the “step and repeat” by Bill Sandke from CrownCity Photography while a team from Coronado’s new Channel 19 filmed and interviewed the arrivals.
Many guests, including a group of CoSA students, also arrived dressed as movie stars and characters – everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Mary Poppins.
John Weisbarth, Emmy Award-winning sports reporter and former voice of theSan Diego Padres, dressed in a tuxedo and white silk scarf, served as an exquisite Master of Ceremonies. Weisbarth wooed the crowd and kept the party going during commercial breaks with Hollywood banter and giveaways.
The vibe in Nicky Rottens was simply energizing as guests mixed and mingled and cheered on their favorite actors, actresses and movies during the broadcast of the Oscars. The waitstaff, who were dressed to the nines, flawlessly delivered platters of scrumptious eats and kept theguests happy with delicious cocktails. Searchlights positioned on the corner of Orange and First furthered the depiction of a true Hollywood scene.
The event also included a silent auction; the most-coveted auction item was the 20th Century Fox movie premiere and celebrity after-party. Additional popular auction items included Wizard of Oz 75th Anniversary items and a poster with all the cast of the TV show The Sopranos that had authenticated autographs of the entire cast, including James Gandolfini, who died last year.
Partygoers also had the opportunity to predict winners in each televised Oscar category for a chance to win prizes during commercial breaks. The grand prize was four tickets to the Universal Studios Theme Park in Los Angeles.
So what is next for the Coronado Island Film Festival? Well, this is just the beginning.
“We have several fun events just on the horizon,” said CIFF executive Director Doug St. Denis. “And save the date for next year’s Oscar Party – Sunday, Feb. 22nd, 2015. We’re off and running!”
And that’s a wrap.
