Jaicey Tyler, a key player in tournament victories
This past week was an eventful one for the Islander’s Women’s Water Polo Team. Thursday, January 23rd, Coronado pulled out an 8-7 win against rivals The Bishops School. The JV team also won 5-4 in overtime. The very next day, Coronado hosted the America’s Finest City Tournament. 32 teams participated at 4 different venues. Coronado, seated third going into the tournament, had two early victories on Friday against Mt. Carmel High School (13-2) and Los Osos (11-5). Saturday’s first game was a bit tougher against Dana Hills High School, but Coronado won 12-9, moving on to the semifinals. In the semifinals the Islanders faced Long Beach Wilson. Last month Coronado lost to this team by 1 point; all were determined to not let that happen again. It was the best game played as a team all weekend, winning 13-9, advancing to the finals. The Islanders played San Clemente in the championship game coming up short 7-9.
The outcome of this weekend leaves us wanting more. We are excited to begin the second round of league play. Currently we are seated first in Division III. With only three weeks left in our regular season we are refining details, and continuing to work hard in the pool and in the weight room.
