Rex Butler has been part of four NCAA men’s water polo championships at USC.
This season, however, the former All-San Diego Section pick from Coronado High felt like “I was really part of it,” scoring two goals as the Trojans overcame an early deficit and beat Pacific 12-11 in overtime in the title game.
It was the sixth straight NCAA title for USC.
“Last year, the team didn’t rely on me,” Butler said. “This season, I had to step up because I was expected to score.”
And score he did, finding the back of the net 39 times, including twice in the NCAA semifinal against St. Francis of Brooklyn.
