Pirates of Penzance at Coronado School of the Arts

Think pirates are swashbuckling, scary guys who run around with skulls and crossbones? You haven’t met the tender-hearted Pirates of Penzance! This comic musical by Gilbert and Sullivan features Frederic, who having turned 21 years old, is released from his apprenticeship to the band of pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the two young people fall instantly in love. Frederic finds out, however, that he was born on February 29, so technically he only has a birthday once every four years. Because his apprenticeship says he must remain apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday, he must serve for another 63 years! Bound by his sense of duty, Frederic’s only solace is that Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully.

Come enjoy this delightful story, filled with songs you’ll recognize and hum as you swashbuckle your way home!
