Football: Coronado’s Mills Record-Bound at USD


A San Diego County high school product is about to shatter a USD record set by a quarterback now playing in the National Football League.

Barring injury, former Coronado High standout Mason Mills will erase Josh Johnson’s name from the USD record book on Saturday when the Toreros (4-2, 3-0) visit Dayton (4-2, 2-1).

HIGH SCHOOL: Attended Coronado High School where he was coached by Bud Mayfield… Garnered a slew of honors as a senior, including All-State, All-CIF, All-City, and all-league recognition… Set a new San Diego CIF single-season completion record by completing 72% of his passes… During his senior year he threw for 2,960 yards and 37 TDs while adding 450 yards rushing… Was named the 2009-09 San Diego Union Tribune male student-athlete of the year… As a junior earned all-league honors after passing for 1,350 yards with 15 TDs… Helped his team win a Central League championship as a sophomore… Tallied 600 yards passing and 9 TDs that season… Earned four varsity letters in baseball… Named All-Western League twice and All-Division IV in baseball… His team won a CIF championship in 2008.
