Captain Phillips: Now Playing at Coronado Village Theatre

Captain Phillips illustrates the real-life story of Captain Richard Phillips’ 2009 struggle to defeat the Somali pirate hijacking of the United States’ ship, Maersk Alabama. When a Somali pirate captain, Muse, targets Phillips’ unarmed ship, the entire crew’s safety is in danger.

The focus of the film, however, centers around the relationship between Phillips and Muse, whose standoff against each other embodies a personification of good versus evil, with their psychological back-and-forth. The film truly allows viewers to experience the perils and nerves that accompany a hostage situation, while showing the world what a hero Richard Phillips was.

For those who believe Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow an authentic pirate, Captain Phillips debunks that assumption: true pirates are vicious, strategic, and ragged. This film is not for the faint of heart, as it leaves your palms sweaty and your heart pounding. Moviegoer Melissa Stubbs attests to this sentiment, saying, “I felt the movie’s intensity from start to finish. Tom Hanks was amazing!”
