Wednesday, September 5, 2012, was a momentous occasion at Coronado Rotary. There was a presentation of a $21,000 check to Cherri Barnswell of the Armed Services YMCA. Sherry administers the money for the C-5 Unit which supports the Wounded Warriors Amputee Center at Balboa Naval Hospital.
The money was raised by Rotary’s Low Tide Ride and Stride event on the Strand on June 24, led by the efforts of Rotarians Gary Kennedy, Howard Somers, Jane Braun, and Mike Woiwode, all pictured as Cherri received the check, the largest donation of the year by Coronado Rotary.
Rotary also celebrated the new American citizenship of Lupita Ponce, a new Coronado Rotarian, depicted as President Walt Heinecke congratulated her.
The very informative speaker was VADM Robert S. Harward, Deputy Commander, US Central Command (USCENTCOM), Tampa, FL., a former neighbor of Councilman Al Ovrom, who welcomed him along with three generations of Ovrom Rotarians present at the meeting, including Matt Ovrom, the Junior Rotarian from Coronado High School.
Coronado Rotary is an extremely active fundraising organization, heavily investing in time and energy to better the community, the nation, and the world through local hands-on Rotary Work Days and production of events like Low Tide Ride and Stride, as well as contributing to the greater good of wiping out polio worldwide.
