Over half of the US Women’s Field Hockey Team, who just qualified for the 2012 Olympics, lives in Coronado. With eight women in a house in the Coronado Cays, three in a house on D Ave and a one in a house off Palm Ave, they have made themselves at home on the island.
Coronado provides the ideal place for them to live since they are currently training at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista.
“It is so nice to drive back here and decompress and get away from field hockey,” said Lauren Crandall, “but I still run into these guys [her teammates] all the time.”
“Mostly at the ice cream place,” another team member added.
For the interview I met them outside of one of their many hangouts on the island, Café Madrid, or as they like to call it, their “Green Awning Coffee Shop.” Mentioning Panera Bread, Yogurt Escape and Which Wich as a few of their other hangouts, they unanimously agreed Coronado is the best place for them.
Living in Chula Vista, Hillcrest, and even a hotel in Mission Valley, every team member agreed the easygoing island-life is the perfect place for them to relax during their intense training schedules.
Gearing up for the Olympics, the team will soon be heading to Spain, Australia and New Zealand to play those teams as practice before facing them during the Olympics.
