Meeting with the Chairman of the Coronado Transportation Commission this morning, I was informed of the difference between this newly formed commission compared to previously formed groups, discussed the goals of the commission, and brought up the tunnel issue. Here is what I now know:
What is the difference between the old committees or traffic groups and the newly formed CTC?
The Coronado Transportation Commission, which was developed in May, is a group of seven volunteers with varying backgrounds who are all interested in studying transportation as a whole in Coronado. Covering everything from pedestrians to vehicular traffic to whether or not speed bumps or crosswalks should be added, the new commission, while similar to previous groups formed, has a set of goals that will guide their meetings.
What are the goals for the CTC?
The set goals are to study traffic flow and traffic calming. The strategy of the commission is to “develop actions that will improve the quality of life through quantifiable traffic calming and other transportation solutions.”
Mike Giorgione, Chairman of the CTC said, “I want to dispel the myths and emphasize the facts.”
With a strong engineering background, Giorgione has studied the traffic problem in Coronado and was involved in the process of whether or not Coronado should construct a tunnel to ease traffic problems.
Is the tunnel the solution for Coronado? Will this be revisited?
“I do not think anyone can argue about whether or not constructing a tunnel would ease traffic issues, it definitely would,” said Giorgione, “however, whether or not it is a wise decision for the city to spend the time, resources, and money to construct a tunnel is a different question entirely.”
At this point, the commission is listening to presenters from the Navy, CALTRANS, and the Coronado Police Department and discussing the facts of Coronado’s transportation as it is now. By first focusing on questions such as; does Coronado have a considerable traffic problem, is there a feasible solution, and should new things be implemented, the commission will research and strategize.
When does the CTC meet? Can the public attend?
All meetings are open to the public and an open forum is held at the beginning of each meeting in order for the public to bring issues to the CTC’s attention. While their regularly scheduled meetings take place at 3pm on the first Thursday of the month, the commission will discuss moving the meeting time to later in the evening to allow the working public to still have the opportunity to attend and voice their concerns.
