Pertussis Immunization Required for School – It’s the Law

All students entering 7th, 8th,9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade are now required by law to have Whooping Cough Vaccination. This was in response to the serious problems whooping cough infections last year. More information about Whooping Cough can be found at:http://www.helppreventwhoopingcough.com

The law AB 354 requires that all students to show proof of Tdap booster before starting school this year. Thankfully, Senate Bill 614 grants schools the option to allow students a 30 day extension, but a last minute rush to the get the vaccine with potential delays and shortages are expected.

Your primary care provider’s office is still the best place to get the vaccine if you have insurance. The County of San Diego sponsors a network of immunization clinics that provide shots to the general public for $10 (http://www.sdiz.org/documents/IZ-clinics/iz9e.pdf). Many pharmacies are offering the Tdap vaccine for a cash prices ranging from $75- $85 plus an administration fee.
