For Lamb’s, a time of transition – Facing financial realities, the 40-year-old company reshuffles and rethinks

Because he had his eyes on the horizon, Robert Smyth fell into an elephant’s footprint.

That’s not some loopy attempt at literary symbolism, but a description of an actual mishap that befell the producing artistic director of Lamb’s Players Theatre, the Coronado-based company that opens its 40th-anniversary season this week with “Steel Magnolias.”

And yet if you squint at the incident in just the right way (keeping in mind that metaphors can be nearly as treacherous as strolling across the Zambian savanna), it just might say something larger about the man and his theater.
