Jessop’s jewelry store leaving Hotel Del in June

After more than three decades of operation in the Hotel del Coronado, the Jessop jewelry store has lost its lease and is closing June 13.

Jim Jessop, whose family once operated seven stores in San Diego, will consolidate in its last remaining store in downtown San Diego’s Emerald Plaza.

“It’s the passing of an era,” said Jessop, great-grandson of Joseph Jessop, who opened the first Jessop’s in downtown San Diego in 1892. The store’s Hotel Del lease is expiring as demand for luxury jewelry has fallen victim to a sluggish economy, so the hotel wants to change its retail mix.

“We don’t need two high-end jewelry stores,” said Hotel Del General Manager Todd Shallon. “We’re trying to find the best use for the space.”

An opal and gems boutique with a lower price point is now scheduled to open in the Jessop’s space.
