By: XK Staff Kiko Medina directs the female talent in Coronado as the girls director of coaching for Nado Select and the coach of Coronado HS’s women’s varsity soccer team. The 12-year coaching veteran wants his personal experience playing soccer to spill over into the players he coaches. Medina gets real in this one-on-one. XKSD: What teams have you coached/are you coaching? KM: I have coached for LV Premier, Albion and Chula Vista HS. I currently coach for Nado Select and Coronado HS. XK: What is your playing experience? KM: I played in college and semi-pro. XK: How did you get into coaching? KM: I have a passion for the game and I want to influence my players the same way that my coaches influenced me. XK: Who were the coaches you played under/coached with who have shaped your style of coaching? KM: Manny Neves, Ralf Wilhelms and Malcom Tovey. XK: What attracted you to your current club? KM: Manny Neves. His passion and enthusiasm for the game are contagious. XK: What is one of your proudest coaching moments? KM: When my BU15 team was a State Cup finalist in ’07, and when Coronado HS won the CIF title in ’08. XK: If you could, would you change anything about club soccer? KM: Yes, there are too many clubs. XK: If you could take the field with any player (past or present), who would it be? KM: Zinedine Zidane. He is a complete player.
