Did you hear the helicopters circling Coronado tonight? Here’s why… By Jose Luis Jiménez Union-Tribune Staff Writer 9:15 p.m. September 1, 2009 SAN DIEGO Two men or boys were shot, one fatally, Tuesday evening, according to San Diego police. One who was shot was taken to a hospital, and a vehicle possibly connected to the shootings was found nearby. Officers from Coronado and San Diego searched the Coronado Golf Course, Tidelands Park, the ferry landing and nearby neighborhoods for several hours looking for suspects. One person was detained Tuesday night and police said they were investigating if the person played a role in the shootings. San Diego police were called about 6:20 p.m. to 28th and Main streets in Barrio Logan to investigate a report of gunfire in the area. Police believe the shootings occurred at a small shopping center just to the east of the intersection, which was blocked off with yellow police tape. Detectives are investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting, said San Diego police Capt. Christopher Ball. Detectives from the department’s gang unit were seen helping the investigation. Sandra Federico said she was inside her apartment about one block east of 28th and Main streets when she heard six gunshots in a row. She said she did not hear anything, like arguing, that may have led to the shooting. Officers checking the area found a man or boy lying on the street near 26th and Main streets, Ball said. He apparently was shot and also showed signs of trauma, the captain said. Paramedics took the unidentified victim to UCSD Medical Center, where he died, Ball said. Minutes later, police were called from Coronado hospital about a second unidentified man or boy who was taken there with gunshot wounds, the captain said. He was later transferred to a trauma center. Officers found a vehicle near the hospital that police believe may have been used in the shootings. That led officers to search multiple areas on the island for suspects. No one has been located so far.
