Another Fundraising Scam Soliciting Funds Targets Businesses for CHS Sports Teams

Yet another school-related fundraising scam has hit Coronado, saying they are representing Coronado’s CHS baseball and softball boys’ programs. It was brought to the attention of the Coronado Schools Foundation by one of their business partners. When CSF called the number on the invoice and spoke to “Ben,” he assured CSF that it was legitimate, that businesses who participate would be featured on posters in town with the athletic schedules on them, and that this company also does the programs for the teams. He assured that “part of the proceeds” go to the school and that funds pay for equipment costs and travel expenses. When asked for the name of the Athletic Director he was working with at CHS, he got very quiet and said he would text it. He was given a cell phone number, but CSF has not heard from him. The local business partner also showed CSF what looked like a very official website that Ben had showed her.

CHS Athletic Director Robin Nixon, along with CSF Chief Executive Officer Patty Cowan, would like local businesses to be aware of this scam. If a person soliciting on behalf of the schools, whether for academics or sports, is not a known entity, local business owners are encouraged to check with Robin Nixon (522-8907, ext. 2802) or Patty Cowan (437-8059, ext. 3) before making any commitment or donation since these scams are brought to their attention at least twice per academic year.

CSF values the support of our local businesses and is happy to assist in any way.
