Last week, the girls’ varsity volleyball team took two losses against University City High School and Cathedral Catholic High School. With star player Ruthie Grant-Williams injured, the team is at a disadvantage, although Izzy Laroe leads the team in kills and Kareemah Hopkins is the leading setter.
The loss to University City was in three straight sets. The first was a tight set at 24-26. The second set ended quicker at 15-25, and the final set score was 16-25.
On Thursday, the Islanders lost to Cathedral Catholic, three sets to one. The first set went easily to Cathedral with a score of 13-25. Stepping up their game in the second set, they won by a two-point margin at 26-24. The following sets were just as close, 22-25 and 21-25.
Most of the opponents are Division II teams, although Coronado will be playing in CIF’s for Division III. This allows for excellent competition and preparation for the tournament as they progress throughout the season. Their current season record is 6 wins to 5 losses. The league record is one win to two losses.
