CHS Cross Country Competes in 2017 Bronco Roundup

Coronado Islander Cross Country

Islanders Cross Country
Teresa Perez sprints the last 200 meters to place third.

The second meet of the season for the Coronado Islanders cross country team took them to Kit Carson Park in Escondido to run in the Bronco Roundup Invitational. Being the first time to compete at this race, the runners had no idea what was to come in the two-mile course. It featured several sections in soft sand, making it difficult to grab on to the hills quickly.

The girls’ varsity team ran early, at 8 AM. Overall, they placed third out of almost 20 schools in the competitive Division 1. Teresa Perez placed third out of 95 total runners with a time of 11:40 (Mile-Time: 5:50). Madden Hundley took 19th place with a time of 12:16 (Mile-Time: 6:08). Abigail Hundley, Claire Morris, Jessica Ehret, Naya Tamariz, and Natalya Gomez also completed the race, giving the team a third-place victory.

The top two teams in our Western league were in the race (Cathedral Catholic and University City) as well as the other strong team in CIF Division-IV (Sage Creek). Coach Green’s goal was to see how we stacked up against them. The girls’ varsity team’s third place finish put them ahead of University City (sixth), Sage Creek (seventh) and Cathedral Catholic (eighth).

Islanders Cross Country
Spencer Busby sprints to the finish line.

The boys’ varsity ran next, placing ninth overall in the Division 1 race. Spencer Busby placed seventh out of 93 runners with a time of 10:17 (Mile-Time: 5:09). Ian Hurlburt placed 25th, finishing in 10:40 (Mile-Time 5:20). Cole Mullins, Casey Harris, Connor Jaynes, and Grant Hawthorne also finished in this race.

Finishers in the girls’ JV race were Abby Fabiszak, Regina Czerewko, Katherine Ruiz, and Emma Kilfoil. In the boys’ JV race, finishers were Andres de la Lama, Kento Kitabayshi, and Will Leonard.
