THE PROBLEM: When Sheila Corzine first noticed CAUTION tape around a hazardous section of stairs at the Shores Beach in Coronado early this year, some beachgoers were ignoring it and using the steps anyway. Later, new tape appeared that was better positioned to keep people off. Now it’s been up so long the tape has faded to nearly white. Half the stairs are fine, so there’s no trouble getting to and from the public beach near the foot of Avenida de las Arenas. On the closed-off half, concrete has flaked away and some corroded reinforcing steel is exposed. Corzine, who lives nearby, said when she called the Coronado city manager’s office to push for a repair job, she was told the stairs would be replaced in time for the summer rush. Now, the summer crowds are gone, Corzine said, with no apparent work. STATUS: The Coronado City Council awarded an $18,748 contract for the work June 16. The project can start as soon as its stainless-steel handrails are approved and delivered, said Ed Walton, director of engineering. The project should be done by Oct. 16, Walton said. When work couldn’t start as early as the city originally wanted, Walton said that officials decided they didn’t want the beach “torn up during summer.” See the entire Union Tribune article and photo here.
