Environmental Impact Statement for the Naval Base Coronado Coastal Campus Proposal – Public Invited to Attend on July 17th and 18th

Naval Base Coronado, Calif. – The Department of the Navy (Navy) announces its intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for the Naval Base Coronado Coastal Campus proposal and to conduct public scoping by holding open-house meetings and initiating a 30-day public scoping comment period. The 30-day public scoping process is intended to identify community interests and specific issues to be addressed in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

The EIS will be developed and the environmental planning process followed under the National Environmental Policy Act to evaluate the environmental impacts associated with construction and upgrades of utilities and infrastructure on Naval Base Coronado, Coronado, California. These shore installation management activities, designed as a Coastal Campus, will support the tenant, Naval Special Warfare Command.

An EIS is considered the appropriate document to comprehensively analyze land and facilities usage on Naval Base Coronado, to include the Silver Strand Training Complex, Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, Naval Air Station North Island, and Naval Outlying Landing Field Imperial Beach. Development of the Coastal Campus by both land utilization, as well as construction and upgrades of facilities and infrastructure, will occur within the existing Naval Base Coronado federal real estate footprint.

The Navy is holding two public scoping meetings to support an early and open review of the process. The purpose of the meetings is to encourage publiccomment to ensure that potential environmental impacts and reasonable alternatives to the proposed action are identified and considered in the Environmental Impact Statement.

Two public scoping meetings will be held to receive written and/or oral comments, scheduled for 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, as follows:

(1) Tuesday, July 17, 2012 – City of Imperial Beach, Marina Vista Community Center, 1075 Eighth Street, Imperial Beach, California, 91932-2709

(2) Wednesday, July 18, 2012 – City of Coronado, Winn Room, Coronado Public Library, 640 Orange Avenue, Coronado, California, 92118-2232

At these meetings, representatives of NBC will be on hand to provide information on the proposed NBC Coastal Campus, describe the process for preparing an EIS, and provide opportunities for discussion of issues of interest.
