Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride comes to Coronado

Avenue of Heroes (Third and Fourth Streets Planning Community) welcomes the Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride to Coronado. Join in showing neighborhood pride to these riders where the Avenue of Heroes meets Tidelands Park at the end of Third Street, Friday, March 14, 10:00-11:30. Wounded Warriors from around the country will cycle under the bridge and along the strand and back to Tidelands. The group motto is “only as fast as our slowest rider.”

The cycling event helps Wounded Warriors restore their physical and emotional well-being with warriors of all ability levels participating. There are state-of-the-art adaptive hand cycles, trikes, and bicycles to accommodate warriors with various injuries and disabilities, as well as unmodified road bikes for riders not requiring adaptive equipment. Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) provides equipment and support at no cost to warriors.

Soldier Ride® began in 2004 when civilian Chris Carney cycled more than 5,000 miles coast-to-coast in support of WWP. In 2005, Carney again cycled coast-to coast, this time with several combat-wounded veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. President Bush called it “the most inspiring athletic event in the country.” April 2013, President Obama and soldiers met privately before the Ride.

Soldier Ride raises awareness for our nation’s wounded warriors who battle the physical and psychological damages of war and gives the public a chance to honor these men and women. The event takes place in 18 cities across the United States in 2014.

Wounded Warrior Project is recognizing its ten-year anniversary, reflecting on a decade of service and reaffirming its commitment to serving Wounded Warriors for their lifetime. To get involved visit woundedwarriorproject.org, or learn more about Soldier Ride here.
