Design Review Committee: The Design Review Commission last week approved the exterior design of the proposed redevelopment of the Villa Capri into a four-story 40-room hotel with a rooftop bar/restaurant and underground parking. The project will also be heard by the Historic Resource and Planning Commissions as well as the City Council. The Commission also approved exterior design changes for the new restaurant, The Henry, under construction at 1031 Orange Ave. Lastly, the Commission approved various exterior improvements at the Hotel del Coronado.
Museum Month: February is San Diego Museum Month. The Coronado Public Library, along with other local libraries, is distributing Museum Passes offering residents and visitors an opportunity to enjoy half-price admission at more than 40 San Diego museums during the month of February. The passes are available at the Children’s information desk.
Boathouse Restaurant Plan: The City Council took the first step on Tuesday, February 19, to develop a long-term stewardship plan for the City-owned building that houses the Bluewater Boathouse Seafood Grill restaurant. The Boathouse Restaurant facility was built in 1887 and is located on City property. Although the building is more than 130 years old, a plan for its long-term stewardship has never before been developed. The Council authorized City staff to use a private firm to develop a long-term stewardship plan that will be a proactive guide to preservation and maintenance of this important landmark.
Subsurface Void Repairs: Public Services staff continued to monitor the area at Eighth Street and Coronado Avenue where a subsurface void was found. It was found this week that the street surface continued to sink even though a temporary fix was completed last week. An emergency declaration was issued Wednesday, February 20, to allow the City to move forward with permanent repairs. A contractor was hired to make immediate repairs. It is anticipated that construction will take six weeks and will include dewatering, shoring, replacement of a storm-drain manhole and street repairs. The intersection will continue to be closed until the repairs are completed.
