Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.
Sewer and Alley Improvement Project
Construction continued this week with work primarily focused in the alleys of D/E avenues between Third and Fourth streets. Rain the previous week delayed a scheduled concrete pour and resulted in the contractor having to compact and grade a portion of the alley again. Concrete was poured this week and the alley remains closed to traffic. Work in a portion of the alley was delayed to coordinate utility improvements being completed by a private contractor early next week. The alley is currently expected to reopen either Friday, May 22 or Tuesday, May 26, depending on the speed at which the concrete cures and reaches its design strength. Construction in Miguel Avenue is expected to begin on Monday, May 18.
Bike to Work Day Postponed
Planned Bike to Work Day events, such as a Pit Stop at the Coronado Ferry Landing, have been postponed until Friday, May 29, due to heavy rains. The City encourages Coronado employers, residents and commuters to ride their bikes throughout Bike to Work Week, May 11 to 15, and the year. Learn more about National Bike Month at SANDAG’s iCommute Bike Month Page.
Traffic Pedestrian Accident
A 68-year-old man attempting to cross Fourth Street at A Avenue was struck by a small pickup truck at about 5 p.m. on Monday, May 11. The man was transported to a San Diego hospital with very serious injuries and died a few hours later. The collision is under investigation and no further details are available at this time.
Arrest in Hot Prowl Burglaries
Coronado detectives arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with the hot prowl burglaries that occurred overnight on Friday, May 8. He was identified through fingerprints left at the crime scenes. Detectives were able to recover some of the stolen property. The man is being charged with two counts of felony burglary and one count of attempted burglary. He was transported to San Diego Central Jail with bail set at $500,000.
